No. Everything works in the browser at checkyourfriend.app. The apps add one thing: they set your status for you, so your friends see what you are up to without you thinking about it.
Your status — and, if you allow it, the name of the app or website you are using. You choose this separately for friends and for groups, and you can hide any app. Nothing else ever leaves your device.
Your computer takes priority while you are using it. When you leave it alone for two minutes, your phone takes over.
